LOS ANGELES - UCLA freshman men's tennis player Marcos Giron moved one step closer to qualifying for one of the biggest tournaments of the fall season on Tuesday, as he battled back from a set down to win his second-round qualifying match at the 2011 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Giron cruised in the next two sets against Wichita State's Matheus Pereira, eventually winning 6-7, 6-2, 6-1. If Giron can beat fifth-seeded Nikola Bubnic of San Diego on Wednesday, he will earn a spot in Thursday's main draw. UCLA's Adrien Puget and Clay Thompson will also be in action on Thursday, as both were direct entries into the main draw and did not have to go through qualifying.
The Bruins' only other player competing in singles in Tulsa this week was junior Alex Brigham, who suffered a 6-2, 6-3 first-round loss to Lars Behlen of Baylor on Monday.
