BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The UCLA men's water polo team has been ranked fourth in the national collegiate preseason poll, as released Wednesday by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The Bruins earned 85 points in the preseason poll, as California, USC and Stanford rounded out the top three spots, respectively.
The top seven teams all compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine have been ranked fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Loyola Marymount (Western Water Polo Association) has been slotted eighth, and MPSF competitor Long Beach State is ranked ninth. Navy (Collegiate Water Polo Association) rounds out the top 10 teams.
UCLA returns 13 letterwinners, including the program's top two scorers from last season - junior Scott Davidson (49 goals) and Krsto Sbutega (37 goals). The Bruins also welcome back All-America goalkeeper Chay Lapin, who enters his junior season.
Last fall, UCLA tied Stanford for third place in the MPSF standings, finishing with a 21-7 overall record and a 5-3 conference mark. The Bruins finished in fifth place at the 2007 MPSF Tournament.
