PULLMAN, Wash. - The UCLA baseball team lost at Washington State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field in the second contest of a three-game Pac-10 series. Designated hitter Alex Weber-Shapiro led the Bruins at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs and one walk.

The Cougars (12-12, 4-1 Pac-10) were led at the plate by right fielder Jared Prince, who went 3-for-3 with his third home run of the season, two runs and two RBI. First baseman Alex Burg went 2-for-4 with one run and shortstop Shea Vucinich went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Washington State right-hander Chad Arnold (3-1) earned the victory, limiting UCLA (10-17, 4-4 Pac-10) to two runs and six hits in six innings. UCLA right-hander Charles Brewer (1-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned) and seven hits in a season-high seven innings. Brewer tallied six strikeouts and one walk.

UCLA scored the game's first run, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. After reaching on a base-hit through the right side, designated hitter Alex Weber-Shapiro scored from first base on a double to left field by third baseman Chris Amezquita.

Washington State claimed a 2-1 lead after scoring one pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Prince tripled to right field on a ball lost in the sun by right fielder Justin Uribe. Center fielder Garry Kuykendall bounced a hard ground ball to third baseman Chris Amezquita, who attempted to tag out Prince as he dove back to third base, before pulling first baseman Casey Haerther off the bag with the throw to first. After Kuykendall stole second base, both baserunners scored on a single to right field by Vucinich.

The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the fifth, pushing their cushion to 3-1. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Prince lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, sending home Burg. Brewer helped UCLA escape the jam, striking out Kuykendall before catcher Gino Aielli threw out catcher Greg Lagreid at third base on a two-strike double steal attempt.

Weber-Shapiro belted his first home run as a Bruin, a solo shot into the trees above the 375-foot sign in right-center field, to cut Washington State's lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth.

Both teams traded late solo home runs. Prince's solo blast in the bottom of the eighth extended the Cougars' lead to 4-2. Pinch-hitter Cody Decker belted a solo homer to left-center field in the top of the ninth, trimming UCLA's deficit to 4-3.

UCLA and Washington State conclude their three-game Pac-10 series on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Bruins will send right-hander Trevor Bauer to the mound, and Washington State will counter with right-hander Jared Prince.

Game Notes: Alex Weber-Shapiro logged his third multiple-hit game of the season...Charles Brewer needed just five pitches to record three outs in a 1-2-3 sixth inning...Marc Navarro made his third start of the season in left field...Chris Amezquita made his sixth start of the season, his third at third base...Cody Decker belted his team-leading eighth home run of the season in the ninth inning.
