Washington State claimed a 2-1 lead after scoring one pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Prince tripled to right field on a ball lost in the sun by right fielder Justin Uribe. Center fielder Garry Kuykendall bounced a hard ground ball to third baseman Chris Amezquita, who attempted to tag out Prince as he dove back to third base, before pulling first baseman Casey Haerther off the bag with the throw to first. After Kuykendall stole second base, both baserunners scored on a single to right field by Vucinich.
The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the fifth, pushing their cushion to 3-1. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Prince lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, sending home Burg. Brewer helped UCLA escape the jam, striking out Kuykendall before catcher Gino Aielli threw out catcher Greg Lagreid at third base on a two-strike double steal attempt.
Weber-Shapiro belted his first home run as a Bruin, a solo shot into the trees above the 375-foot sign in right-center field, to cut Washington State's lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth.
Both teams traded late solo home runs. Prince's solo blast in the bottom of the eighth extended the Cougars' lead to 4-2. Pinch-hitter Cody Decker belted a solo homer to left-center field in the top of the ninth, trimming UCLA's deficit to 4-3.
