NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Griffin White scored a season-high five goals to pace the No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team past Redlands, 14-4, in a first-round contest at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday morning. In all, the Bruins (11-2) received goals from nine players.
UCLA led the entire contest against Redlands (8-11), opening a 2-0 lead through the first quarter. The Bruins outscored Redlands by a 4-1 margin in the second period to assume a 6-1 halftime advantage.
Both teams traded one pair of goals in the third quarter, before UCLA sealed the victory by outscoring Redlands, 6-1, in the final quarter.
Redlands received one goal from each of four players.
UCLA returns to action Saturday against No. 8 Long Beach State at Corona del Mar High School. Game time of the quarterfinal match is slated for 3:10 p.m.
