The Bruins worked out Saturday afternoon on new artificial turf and grass fields in their first practice held on campus. The players and coaches then headed to the north end of the Acosta Center and mingled with fans in Drake Stadium at the Meet the Bruins event. The Bruins will be back in action early on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. and follow that up with a second practice, under the lights, at 7:00 p.m.
"It's great to be back on this great, beautiful, brand new practice field," said head coach Jim Mora in his post-practice interview session. "It's good to be in this environment, at home, and I think it has been refreshing for our guys."
Coach Mora announced after the session that offensive lineman Jake Seydel had joined the team for practice. He indicated that Seydel, who played junior college ball at Riverside City College in 2011, would line up mostly at guard and a little at tackle. Seydel prepped at Arlington High School in Riverside, CA.
Practices on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, at Spaulding Field on the Westwood campus, will be open to the public. Those practices are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday; 11:30 a.m. on Monday; and at 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The team will then begin preparations for the first game.
UCLA opens the 2012 football season on the road with a game against Rice on August 30 (6:30 p.m. CT/4:30 p.m. PT). The Bruins then return home to the Rose Bowl for three straight games --- Nebraska (Sept. 8, 4:30 p.m.), Houston (Sept. 15, 7:30 p.m.) and Oregon State (Sept. 22, time TBA).
