SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 4-seeded UCLA women's water polo team earned a 12-10 victory over No. 5-seed USC in a first round match of the MPSF Tournament on Friday afternoon at San Jose State's Aquatics Center.
Senior Priscilla Orozco and junior KK Clark each scored four goals to lead the Bruins (23-5) to a crucial victory over the Women of Troy (16-6). Friday's win propels UCLA into a semifinal meeting against top-seeded Stanford (24-0) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Bruins scored the first four goals of the match in the opening 4:16 and claimed a 7-3 lead at halftime. Priscilla Orozco led UCLA's offense with three of her four goals in the first quarter. UCLA opened a five-goal lead (6-1) in the second quarter before USC reduced the Bruins' deficit to as few as two goals.
The Women of Troy outscored UCLA by a 4-3 margin in the third period, closing the Bruins' margin to 10-7.
UCLA goalkeeper Caitlin Dement tied her season high with 13 saves. USC goalkeeper Flora Bolonyai netted eight saves in the cage for the Women of Troy.
The Bruins will play No. 1-seed Stanford in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of that game advances to the championship match on Sunday at 3 p.m.
