LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 1 USC on Saturday afternoon. Senior Krsto Sbutega led the visiting Bruins with two goals in an MPSF contest at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.
USC's J.W. Krumpholz led the Trojans (20-0, 5-0 MPSF) with a game-high three goals, and Justin Rappel added a pair of goals.
The contest remained scoreless until Krumpholz scored with 1:32 to play in the first quarter. Rappel doubled the Trojans' lead, scoring on a 6-on-5 opportunity with seven seconds remaining in the opening frame.
The Bruins (11-5, 3-2 MPSF) cut the Trojans' margin in half when Sbutega scored the first of his two goals on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 2:59 remaining in the first half. USC added to its advantage on a goal by Devon Borisoff with seven seconds left in the second quarter.
The Trojans extended their lead to 4-1 with 7:20 to play in the third quarter, as Rappel helped USC convert on a 6-on-5 opportunity. The Bruins again sliced the deficit in half on a goal by Scott Swanson with 5:07 left in the third period.
USC led 5-2 after three quarters and increased its margin to 6-2 with 5:41 remaining in the final period. Sbutega scored the game's final goal on a penalty shot with 4:25 to play in the contest.
UCLA junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin recorded 10 saves in the cage. USC's Joel Dennerley made nine stops.
The Bruins return to action Friday, Nov. 7, against UC Irvine. Game time at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is slated for 3 p.m.
