Los Angeles, Calif. - Second-ranked UCLA increased its school-record unbeaten streak to 25 games after a 3-0 victory over 21st-ranked California Friday afternoon at Drake Stadium. The Bruins (15-0-2 overall, 8-0-1 in the Pac-12) used three second-half goals to claim their eighth consecutive victory and to put an end to the eight-game winning streak by the Golden Bears (14-4-0, 7-2-0).
After a scoreless first half in which the Bruins outshot the Bears, 10-1, UCLA wasted no time in getting on the board. Senior Zakiya Bywaters recorded her team and Pac-12-leading 12th goal of the season at 48:10. Taylor Smith and Jenna Richmond set up the play with a give and go before Richmond chipped the ball into the box for Bywaters over the Cal defense. Bywaters sent a left-footed shot far post past a diving Emily Kruger for the 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, UCLA doubled its lead on a penalty kick by sophomore Sarah Killion, her third goal of the season. Smith earned the penalty kick when she was fouled in the box at 52:01.
UCLA closed the scoring at 86:23 when Chelsea Cline sent in a long throw-in into the box that bounced in front of the goal to Crystal Shaffie. The sophomore shot left-footed to the far post for her first career goal.
The Bruins outshot the Bears 21-4 in the game and forced Kruger into making nine saves. UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland made just one save to earn the shutout, her ninth of the season, and the team's 11th.
UCLA wraps up its regular-season home schedule on Sunday against top-ranked Stanford at 6pm. Senior Day festivities honoring Bywaters, Cline and Lucretia Lee, will take place at approximately 5:50pm. Sunday's match will mark the third time the two teams have played each other in a 1 vs. 2 matchup.
