STOCKTON, Calif. - Sophomore Jacob Murphy scored a pair of goals and junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin registered 12 saves to lead the No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 1 California, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at St. Mary's High School.
The Bruins (4-0) earned their first berth in the NorCal Tournament's first-place game since 2002 and recorded their first win over the Golden Bears (6-1) since Oct. 8, 2005.
UCLA will face No. 2 USC in the first-place match on Sunday at 5:20 p.m. at Pacific's Chris Kjledsen Pool.
Against California, the Bruins led the entire way. UCLA raced to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter and owned a 3-1 advantage at halftime. The Bruins outscored the Golden Bears, 2-1, in the third quarter to assume a 5-2 lead. California reduced the deficit in the fourth quarter, outscoring UCLA by a 2-1 margin.
California goalkeeper Jacob Macintosh recorded five saves, and Michael Okinczyc totaled two stops.
