LOS ANGELES - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team opened its MPSF schedule with a 14-7 victory over No. 5 San Diego State on Friday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The Bruins recorded seven goals in the second quarter and held on for the victory in their first home contest of the 2009 season.
San Diego State (6-1, 0-1 MPSF) was led by senior Jenna Schuster's four-goal effort. Senior Anna Gonzales added two goals for the visiting Aztecs, and senior Erinn Greenwood scored one goal.
UCLA opened a 4-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Rulon scored the game's first goal, just 1:10 into the contest, and Sarah Orozco doubled the Bruins' advantage with a goal at the 4:20 mark in the first quarter. Priscilla Orozco's goal 21 seconds into the second period swelled the Bruins' advantage to 3-0, and sophomore Kelly Easterday's strike at the 6:33 mark handed UCLA a 4-0 lead.
The Aztecs sliced UCLA's cushion in half, as Schuster scored San Diego State's first goal with 6:18 to play in the first half and Gonzales followed at the 5:42 mark, converting on a five-meter penalty shot.
The Bruins used a 5-2 run to close the second half and assume a 9-4 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, San Diego State reduced its deficit to as few as three goals. The Aztecs closed the gap to 9-6 on Gonzales' second goal of the day with 5:17 remaining in the period.
UCLA took advantage of a 5-0 scoring run in the game's final four minutes to secure the MPSF victory.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen tied her season high with 12 saves in the cage. San Diego State's Kelly Capoli recorded nine saves in goal.
The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team returns to action against No. 9 Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Feb. 14. Game time at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is 1 p.m.
