Third-Ranked Women's Soccer Team Blanks Pepperdine, 1-0

LOS ANGELES - A Lauren Cheney goal in the fifth minute of play was all the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team would need on Friday evening, as the Bruins posted a 1-0 victory over local rival Pepperdine before 813 fans at Drake Stadium. With the win, UCLA (8-0-2) notches its ninth straight shutout, while pushing the nation's longest home winning streak to 41 in a row.

UCLA's goal, scored at the 4:28 mark, was initiated when freshman Sydney Leroux pushed the ball up the left side, eventually laying it off to senior Christina DiMartino. DiMartino found Cheney, who was making a run across the top of the box. Cheney ran to the top right corner of the box before hitting a right-footed shot across her body and into the left corner of the goal, beating Pepperdine goalkeeper Kayla Stolte. It marked Cheney's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Pepperdine (4-6-2) nearly got the equalizer in the 17th minute, as Laura Cole hit a shot off the crossbar. Bruin goalkeeper Ashley Thompson, however, was in position to make the save had the shot been any lower. The Waves had another chance at the 52:18 mark, when Myriah Stockman hit a long shot that bounced off the left post before being cleared by a Bruin defender. Thompson, who made seven saves on the night, registered her fourth shutout of the season Friday.

In addition to several Pepperdine near misses, UCLA had a number of legitimate scoring chances of its own. Both Lauren Barnes and DiMartino had shots ricochet off the post in the 33rd and 38th minutes, respectively. The Bruins outshot the Waves, 17-12 on the evening.

Friday marked the 200th career coaching victory for UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis.

UCLA rounds out the week with another West Coast Conference opponent on Sunday, as the Bruins will host No. 19 San Diego at Noon.
