CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand - Led by former UCLA head coach Adam Krikorian and former players Anne Belden, Emily Feher, Courtney Mathewson and Kelly Rulon, the USA women's water polo national team defeated Australia, 6-3, on Saturday to win the gold medal at the FINA World Cup.
Team USA secured gold at the event for the first time since 1979.
In the gold medal match against Australia, Team USA built a 6-0 lead by halftime and held on for the 6-3 victory. Rulon and Mathewson each scored one goal in the victory.
"We hadn't done it for 31 years [win this tournament]," said Krikorian, who serves as associate head coach of UCLA's men's water polo team. "There have been a lot of great coaches and players before us. We certainly wanted to bring the USA back to the top in this event. We can easily lose to that team at any point. I was very surprised to go out 6-0. We played great defense, especially in the first half."
Since assuming head coaching duties for the USA National Team, Krikorian has led Team USA to first-place finishes at all the major championships including two FINA World League Super Finals, one FINA World Championship and now a FINA World Cup.
