Two Bruins to Compete in World Amateur Team Championship

Oct. 7, 2008

UCLA All-Americans Tiffany Joh and Maria Jose Uribe will be opponents this week, representing their respective countries at the 23rd Women's World Amateur Team Championship at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia, Oct. 8-11.

Joh, a 21-year old senior, is part of a three-player team representing the United States. The two-time U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks champion joins reigning U.S. Women's Amateur champion Amanda Blumenherst and fellow 2008 Curtis Cup teammate Alison Walshe, formerly of the University of Arizona, on the U.S. Team.

Uribe will play for her native Columbia. The 18-year old sophomore won the 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur and earned consensus All-America honors for the Bruins as a freshman last season.

Marcia Luigs of Carmel, IN, USGA Women's Committee chairperson in 2005 and 2006, will serve as the captain of the U.S. Women's Team.

The biennial competition's format features two or three player teams competing for four days and 72 holes. The lowest pair of scores per country are counted as the team score after each day. The country with the lowest team score after 72 holes is declared the winner.

South Africa won the 2006 title in its home country. The United States last won the championship in 1998 and has captured the Espirito Santo Trophy a record 13 times.
