LOS ANGELES - A day after knocking off No. 6 Stanford, the No. 11 UCLA women's tennis team came up just a little short in its bid for a weekend sweep, falling to eighth-ranked Cal, 4-3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Saturday.

UCLA (9-4) started the match strong, taking all three matches to claim the one point awarded for doubles play. The Bruins were dominant at court Nos. 2 and 3, at one point leading 7-0 on both courts. Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore, ranked No. 49 nationally, didn't drop a game en route to an 8-0 victory over Marina Cossou/Claire Ilcinkas at court No. 2. The Bruins clinched the point when Ashley Joelson and Yasmin Schnack downed Bojana Bobusic/Rachael Dillon, 8-2 at court No. 3. Saturday marked Schnack's first appearance in the lineup after missing the last seven matches due to injury.

Although the Bruins had the momentum coming out of doubles, Cal answered back with two quick singles wins to take a 2-1 lead. Claire Ilcinkas downed Joelson, 6-2, 6-1 at court No. 4, and Stephanie Kusano was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Anna-Viktoria Lind at court No. 2.

Lumpkin, however, evened the match for UCLA when she downed Bobusic, 6-2, 6-3 at court No. 5.

With the score tied 2-2, all attention then turned to the top three courts, where every match was extremely close. Cossou brought the Golden Bears within a point of winning, as she fought back for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Tracy Lin at court No. 2.

Senior Riza Zalameda then brought the Bruins even once again, as she won the battle of top 10 opponents with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision against seventh-ranked Susie Babos. Zalameda, ranked No. 10 nationally, fought off two break points down 3-4 in the third set. It marked a huge victory for Zalameda, as Babos is an NCAA Singles Champion, winning the title in 2006.

Zalameda's thrilling victory meant that the match would be decided at court No. 3, where No. 41 Cristina Visico and No. 27 Andrea Remynse were in a tight battle. Visico, down 5-3 at one point, battled back to take the set in a tiebreaker, eventually winning 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) to clinch the match for Cal.

UCLA looks to regroup next week, as the Bruins will play their first Pac-10 counting match against Washington State on Friday at 1:30 p.m. That match will be at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center.
