The No.1 ranked UCLA women's golf team won its sixth team title of the 2011-12 season on Tuesday, capturing the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links.
The Bruins have now won a national-best six tournaments this season, one shy of the school record with three tournaments left on their schedule. In nearly 13 seasons, Hall of Fame coach Carrie Forsyth has guided the Bruins to 46 team titles.
Tuesday's victory was another wire-to-wire triumph for a team that has been ranked atop every poll for most of the season. The Bruins entered the final round with a 14-shot lead, held off a furious rally by arch-rival USC, and won by six shots.
"We played really well, especially [Monday]," said Forsyth.
In addition, freshman Erynne Lee won her first collegiate crown and became the third UCLA player this season to win a tournament. She played 54-holes in nine-under par 207 and etched her name in the school record books, ranking in a tie for fourth on the list of best 54-hole scores. She blistered the wind-swept Ocean Course with rounds of 68-68-71.
"Erynne was just solid the whole tournament," Forsyth continued. "She hit great shots and putted well. If she made a few more putts today, she easily could have shot 66. That's how well she was hitting it."
Junior Tiffany Lua bolstered the UCLA cause by tying for third place at 214 (-2) following a final round score of 73 (+1) and senior Brianna Do also finished under par, tying for fifth at one-under 215. Do posted an even par 72 on Tuesday.
Junior Lee Lopez posted the best UCLA score of the day, a two-under par 70. and tied for 14th at one-over 217. Sophomore Ani Gulugian, who won her first tournament on Apr. 1, tied for 22nd at 219 (+3) after her round of 75 (+3).
