STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 10 Concordia, 12-5, and No. 5 Loyola Marymount, 7-3, on the first day of the NorCal Tournament to secure a semifinal showdown against No. 1 USC on Sunday morning.
UCLA outscored Concordia by a 4-1 margin in the first quarter of its first game before racing to a 7-2 halftime lead. The Bruins received two goals each from senior Scott Davidson and freshmen Josh Samuels and Griffin White in their NorCal Tournament opener.
The Bruins scored five goals in the third frame to open a 12-3 advantage and held off the Eagles for the 12-5 victory. Senior goalkeeper Chay Lapin registered six saves in the first half for UCLA. Freshman goalkeeper Matt Rapacz made three stops in the final two quarters.
In UCLA's second match of the day, the Bruins registered a 7-3 victory over Loyola Marymount. Junior Ben Hohl led the victorious effort for the Bruins with a game-high three goals. UCLA also received one goal each from senior Cole Consani, junior Jacob Murphy and freshmen Bret Lathrope and Josh Samuels.
Against Loyola Marymount, the Bruins opened a 3-0 lead through the first quarter. UCLA led by a 5-1 margin at halftime and secured a 6-1 advantage through the first three quarters.
Lapin and Rapacz each recorded six saves in the first and second halves, respectively.
UCLA returns to action against No. 1 USC on Sunday at 11:10 a.m. in a NorCal Tournament semifinal contest (Stanford's Avery Pool). Stanford and California square off in the tournament's other semifinal match.
