Uribe and Joh Tied after First Round of WWATC

Oct. 8, 2008

UCLA golfers Maria Jose Uribe and Tiffany Joh led their respective countries in the first round of the 23rd Women's World Amateur Team Championship at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia.

Joh led the United States with a one-over par score of 74. She was even par after making a birdie at the 13th hole, but double-bogeyed the 14th to move to two-over. A birdie at the par 5 16th gave her a one-over par score at the par 73 East Course.

Uribe led Colombia with a score of 73 (+1) on the par 72 West Course. The UCLA sophomore flirted with par all day and was one-under through 13 holes after making a birdie at the 10th. However, she bogeyed two of her final five holes.

At one-over par, both players were tied for 10th place individually.

In team competition, the United States was tied for 17th place at six-over par and Columbia was tied for 20th at seven-over. Sweden opened a 10-stroke first round lead with a nine-under par score of 137 on the East Course. Spain was second at one-over par, followed by Japan at two-over. Six teams were tied for fourth place at three-over par.

The World Amateur Team Championship format consists of two or three player teams competing for 48 countries over 72 holes. The two best individual scores per country are counted each day to make up the team score.

Second round action continues on Thursday.
