On the Road Again
The third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team (9-0-2, 2-0-1 in the Pac-12) goes back on the road again for a weekend visit to Oregon. The Bruins will first face Oregon (5-5-2, 0-2-1) on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7pm before taking on Oregon State (9-3-0, 1-2-0) on Sunday, Oct. 7 at Noon. Friday's game will be available on live stream at pac-12.com. Sunday's game against the Beavers will be nationally-televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
Scouting the Ducks
Oregon holds a 5-5-2 record and has lost its last three games, all to ranked teams. The Ducks, however, are 4-1-1 at home. Kristen Parr leads the Ducks' offense with six goals and 12 points. Goalkeeper Abby Steele has a 1.00 goals against average with four shutouts.
UCLA's all-time record against Oregon is 13-2. The Bruins have won the last five contests, including a 1-0 shutout victory at home in 2011. Kylie McCarthy had the lone goal in that match.
Scouting the Beavers
Oregon State enters this weekend's matches with a 9-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 conference record. The Beavers were ranked as high as 12th last week but dropped out of the rankings after losing a pair of games in the Bay Area last weekend. The Beavers are led Megan Miller (3g, 5a, 11 pts.) and Jenna Richardson (4g, 8 pts.). Goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme recorded a dozen saves in OSU's last game, a 3-1 loss at Cal.
UCLA is 14-3 all-time against Oregon State and won last year's match, 1-0, in Los Angeles. The Beavers won the last match played in Corvallis, 3-0, in 2010.
Bruins Remain Unbeaten
UCLA remained among the ranks of the unbeaten (9-0-2) after a pair of wins at the Arizona schools - 2-1 against the Wildcats and 4-1 against the Sun Devils. The Bruins currently have a 19-game unbeaten streak. B.J. Snow, who is in his second season as UCLA head coach, has just one loss in his coaching career, a defeat at Stanford on Oct. 9, 2011.
Bywaters Earns Pac-12 Honors Again
Senior Zakiya Bywaters earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks after a three-goal performance over the weekend. Bywaters had both of UCLA's goals in the 2-1 win at Arizona and the game-winning goal in the 4-1 win at Arizona State. She totaled three goals on six shots in 102 minutes of play and continues to lead the team in scoring with nine goals and 20 points.
UCLA Ranks No. 3 Nationally
The Bruins are ranked No. 3 in all major polls, staying pat in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll and moving up a notch in the Soccer America and Top Drawer Soccer rankings.
Rowland Sets School Record
Sophomore goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland set a new school record for consecutive shutout minutes with 564 to start the season, breaking CiCi Peterson's record of 540, set in 2000. Rowland leads the nation in goals against average (0.27).
Bruins Rank Among Nation's Leaders
As a team, the Bruins rank third in the nation in goals against average (0.350) and eighth in save percentage (0.923).
While Zakiya Bywaters leads UCLA in goals scored with nine, the Bruin offense is far from one-dimensional. Ten players have scored goals for the Bruins this year - Bywaters (9), Taylor Smith (4), Rosie White (3), Ally Courtnall (3), Abby Dahlkemper (3), Chelsea Cline (1), Samantha Mewis (1), Kristiana Konkol-Mroczkowski (1), Kodi Lavrusky (1) and Taylor Alderete (1). Sixteen different players have at least one point.
Team Wins Academic Award
The Bruins were honored last week as the winners of the UCLA Most Improved Team GPA award with a 0.155 improvement from 2010-11 to 2011-12.
Two on Watch List
Senior forward Zakiya Bywaters and sophomore defender Abby Dahlkemper were selected to the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List. Both are proving to be worthy Player of the Year candidates, with the duo leading the team on offense and defense, respectively. Bywaters holds the team lead in scoring with nine goals and 20 points, both career highs, while Dahlkemper has been the defensive leader of a Bruin team that has posted shutouts in seven games. Dahlkemper also has been a strong contributor offensively, posting three goals, including two game-winners, and adding two assists. She is tied for third on the team in scoring with eight points. Bywaters was honored as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 25-Oct. 1 and Sept. 10-16, as well as the Soccer America National Player of the Week for Sept. 10-16. Dahlkemper was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for Aug. 20-27.
