Following its best performance of the season, No. 7 UCLA hosts third-ranked UC Santa Barbara in an MPSF showdown Fri., Feb. 23. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
The match will be broadcast live (audio) on www.uclabruins.com with Darren Preston calling the action. KCSB, UC Santa Barbara's campus radio station, also will originate a broadcast.
The Bruins (9-7, 7-6) defeated CS Northridge in three games on Wednesday. The Gauchos (12-4, 10-3) lost at home in four games to No.2 UC Irvine on the same night.
In the league race, UCSB is tied for second place with UC Irvine trailing first place and top-ranked Pepperdine. The Bruins are seventh.
On Wednesday, the Bruins put together their best performance of the season in sweeping CS Northridge at Pauley. Senior opposite Steve Klosterman hammered 31 kills in 45 attempts with just one error for a .667 attack percentage. He pounded 22 straight kills through three games, a single match school record, which averages out to 10.3 kills per game. This performance is considered one of the best in collegiate history. In addition, his 31 kills and 35 points also were career bests.
UC Santa Barbara, since falling 3-0 to the Bruins on Jan. 5, has won 11 of its last 14, including a five-game triumph over the Bruins on Jan. 17. At the beginning of the week, the Gauchos led the league in hitting percentage (.372), kills (16.51 kpg), aces (2.0) and assists (15.6). UCSB will counter with its own powerful hitter. Senior opposite Evan Patak is the national leader in aces (1.1 apg) and ranks fourth in kills (5.0 kpg). He also leads the league in points (7.71 ppg), kills (6.09 kpg) and aces (1.18 apg).
"UC Santa Barbara is a team we need to beat to improve our position in the conference race," Scates said. "They have multiple offensive threats and we'll need to contain them in order to win the match."
