RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team finished in second place in the 2012 NorCal Tournament at Stanford on Sept. 15-16. UCLA opened with a 16-5 win over No. 19 Concordia and was led by different Bruins who each scored two goals (David Culpan, Anthony Daboub, Lucas Reynolds, Josh Samuels and Chris Wendt). In the quarterfinals, UCLA posted a 9-4 win over No. 7 Pacific. The Bruins were led by Samuels' three goals. In the 11-10 overtime win in the semifinals against No. 3 California, Samuels again led the team with four goals, but sophomore Chris Fahlsing scored the game-winner at 1:34 of the first overtime period. In the finals against No. 1 USC, the Bruins fell behind 5-0 and missed their first 11 shots, before staging a rally, only to fall to the Trojans 7-6 on Sept. 16.
SAMUELS HEATING UP
After missing the first two games of the season with an injury, senior utility Josh Samuels has led UCLA or tied for the lead in scoring in each of the last five matches, including scoring a total of 15 goals in that span. Samuels led UCLA last weekend with 11 goals in the four games of the NorCal Tournament. Samuels currently leads the team in goals (24, 2.4 gpg) and steals (20, 2.0 spg). He has scored in all 10 games he has played this year.
McCLINTICK STREAK SNAPPED
True freshman utility Danny McClintick scored at least one goal in each of his first nine games as a collegian. He then was held scoreless in back-to-back UCLA wins over No. 7 Pacific and No. 3 California, before scoring one goal against USC. McClintick is currently third on the team in goals (17, 1.4 gpg). He is also second on the squad in field blocks (9).
THANK YOU MR. REYNOLDS
Sophomore attacker Paul Reynolds currently leads UCLA in assists (22, 1.8 apg) and is tied for second with senior attacker Bret Lathrope in steals (1.1 spg). He has registered at least one assist in 11 straight games (after failing to do so in game one).
WHITE MAKING PRESENCE KNOWN
Since missing the first three games of the season due to injury, senior attacker Griffin White has made his presence felt. White is currently second on the team in goals (19, 2.1 gpg). He is also second on the team in exclusions drawn (20), trailing only junior utility Aimone Barabino (22).
WRIGHT ON DECK FOR YEAR FOUR
The Bruins are led by fourth-year head coach Adam Wright, who has compiled a 74-19 (.796) record, including a 17-7 mark in MPSF action. Wright played at UCLA from 1997-2000, helping lead the Bruins to NCAA Championships in 1999 and 2000. He played for the USA National Team in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, leading Team USA to a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing. Wright has played for the National Team in every major international tournament since 2001. He has guided the Bruins to two MPSF Tournament titles and runner-up finishes at the NCAA Tournament in his three seasons at the helm. In 2009 and 2011, UCLA won the MPSF Tournament title and advanced to the title match of the NCAA Tournament. Wright was named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading UCLA to the MPSF Tournament title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Tournament.
