UCLA had a wire-to-wire victory in the first set, scoring the first three points and five of the first six. Camp had two kills and Spicer added a kill and an ace during the opening run. The Cavaliers narrowed the gap to one at 7-6, but the Bruins scored four of the next five and never saw their lead slip below two the rest of the way. Ahead 12-10, UCLA netted five in a row to go up by seven. Camp was a part of four of the five points with three kills and a combo block.

Virginia recorded the next four points to cut the deficit to 17-14, but the Bruins maintained at least a three-point advantage for the remainder of the set. The Bruins got their lead to as many as five on two occasions, but Virginia made a run to take its first advantage of the match. With UCLA on top 20-16, Virginia scored six of the next seven points to take a 22-21 lead, forcing the Bruins into a timeout.

The two teams traded sideouts for the next three points, but back-to-back kills by Daley put the Bruins up 24-23.
