Malibu, Calif. - The sixth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team played its final non-conference match of the 2011 season on Wednesday, posting a 4-3 victory over No. 28 Pepperdine at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. UCLA, which rounds out the regular season at No. 14 USC this Friday, improves to 17-5 on the year. With the loss, the Waves see their record fall to 16-7.
Although Pepperdine struck first in doubles with an 8-6 upset at court No. 2, UCLA was able to get wins at court Nos. 3 and 1 to clinch the point. Courtney Dolehide and Andrea Remynse, the nation's 17th-ranked doubles team, secured the doubles point for the Bruins on Wednesday, downing 60th-ranked Anamika Bhargava and Marie Zalameda, 8-6 at court No. 1.
Already with a 1-0 advantage after doubles, UCLA would go ahead 3-0 not long after singles began, as Maya Johansson (court No. 5) and Carling Seguso (court No. 6) each posted straight-set wins. Junior McCall Jones also enjoyed a straight-set victory on the day, clinching the win for UCLA with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Arianna Colffer at court No. 1.
With the match already decided, Pepperdine was able to win the final three matches to cut the score to 4-3.
UCLA's cross-town showdown against the No. 14 Women of Troy this Friday takes place at the Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of USC. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
