WOODLAND, Calif. - The UCLA men's water polo team has been ranked third in the national top-20 preseason rankings, as compiled by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). Additionally, the Bruins have been selected fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) preseason coaches' poll.
UCLA received 42 points in the preseason poll. The Bruins were selected to finish behind USC, Stanford and California, respectively. USC collected six first-place votes, and Stanford registered three first-place votes.
UC Santa Barbara was selected fifth in the coaches' poll, while Pepperdine and UC Irvine tied for the sixth-place slot. Long Beach State and Pacific rounded out the nine-team poll, respectively.
The national top-20 preseason rankings list USC and Stanford as the top two teams, respectively, ahead of No. 3 UCLA and No. 4 California. Pepperdine has been selected fifth, while Loyola Marymount, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Long Beach State and UC San Diego round out the top 10 teams.
UCLA returns 12 letterwinners this fall, after having gone 16-8 in 2008. Last season, UCLA finished fourth at the MPSF Tournament and ended the season ranked No. 4 nationally.
