IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 5 California on Saturday evening, sending the Bruins into a semifinal match at the UC Irvine Invitational against No. 1 USC on Sunday. Senior Tanya Gandy scored a game-high four goals to lead the Bruins (10-2).
California's Emily Csikos led the Golden Bears with two goals.
UCLA scored the game's first five goals and led by a 5-1 margin after one quarter. Orozco opened the scoring with her first of two goals at the 6:34 mark in the first quarter. She followed with UCLA's second goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 5:42 left in the period.
Rulon's goal just 24 seconds later pushed the Bruins' margin to 3-0 and Gandy's first strike of the day at 2:27 gave UCLA a 4-0 cushion. Clark converted on a 6-on-5 play with nine seconds left in the quarter.
California closed the first quarter by scoring on a five-meter penalty shot from Csikos.
Both teams traded one pair of goals in the second quarter, allowing UCLA to assume a 7-3 halftime advantage.
UCLA outscored California, 2-1, in the third quarter, and neither team scored any goals in the final frame.
Game time of UCLA's semifinal match at the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday is slated for 10:30 a.m.
