SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior Dicey McGraw paced the Bruins with 11 kills, while sophomore Mari Hole added seven kills and nine digs in just two sets, as the 14th-ranked Bruins swept UC Riverside on Saturday at the SJSU/SMC Tournament at Spartan Gym. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 25-7.

The Bruins improve to 5-1 with the win, while the Highlanders fall to 0-5.

McGraw hit .435 with just one error in 23 swings. Junior Lainey Gera had a match-high 16 digs, while freshman Mariana Aquino earned her first career start and posted five kills and six blocks. The Bruins hit .312 for the match.

After dropping the first point of the match, the Bruins came back with five of the next six and never trailed for the rest of the set. A kill by sophomore Rachael Kidder and a UC Riverside error gave UCLA a 2-1 lead. Following a UCR sideout, the Bruins scored three straight on back-to-back kills from freshman Kelly Reeves and McGraw and a Reeves ace to make it 5-2.

The Highlanders trimmed their deficit to one a couple of times at 10-9 and 14-13, but the Bruins scored four of five to bring their lead back up to four at 18-14. McGraw and junior Lauren Van Orden both had kills, while the Highlanders also made two errors. UCLA's lead reached a set-high six following an ace by sophomore Bojana Todorovic that made it 24-18. The Bruins won the opener on their second set point on a kill by Aquino to post a 25-19 victory. Kidder and McGraw had four kills apiece, while Reeves added three in the first. The Bruins out-hit the Highlanders .357 to .333.

The Bruins led early, scoring five of the first six on a pair of kills by Reeves and Hole and a UCR attack error. The Highlanders came back to tie it at seven, but a 3-0 UCLA run on kills by McGraw and Van Orden and a Highlander attack error made it 10-7. UCR fought back again and took the lead. Down 11-8, the Highlanders scored six straight to go ahead 14-11.

UCLA battled back though and finished the set with an 11-2 run to win the second. Trailing 17-14, the Bruins recorded an 8-0 run for the fourth time in the last two matches. A pair of kills by Hole, with an Aquino/Hole combo block in between, evened things at 17. McGraw then posted back-to-back spikes and an Aquino kill put the Bruins ahead 20-17. UCLA finished out the run with a pair of roofs on a solo block by McGraw and a combo by Aquino and Hole. The Bruins clinched the set on a kill by junior Sara Sage to win it 25-19. Hole had six kills and two blocks in the second, while McGraw added five kills. The Bruins out-hit the Highlanders .238 to .054.

The Bruins led from start to finish in the third to close out the sweep. UCLA scored the first three of the set on kills by Todorovic and Hole and a combo block by Aquino and Todorovic. After the Highlanders scored two of the next three, the Bruins came back with a 9-0 run to blow it open. Kills by McGraw and Van Orden and an Aquino/Van Orden combo block put the Bruins up 7-2. McGraw then added another kill, which was followed by an Aquino spike and a Hole ace to make it 10-2. Aquino was in on the next three points, teaming up with McGraw and then Van Orden on a pair of blocks and following with a kill to increase the margin to 13-2.

After a UCR sideout, the Bruins got the next four, with freshman Meg Norton posting the first two kills of her career, to make it 17-3. The Highlanders netted the next two, but the Bruins closed out the match with eight of the final 10 points to take it 25-7. UCLA had the final four points on two UCR errors, a solo block by Hole and a Van Orden kill. Todorovic posted three kills and two blocks in the third, while Aquino added two kills and four roofs. The Bruins hit .385, while the Highlanders swung at a -.310 percentage.

The Bruins play a pair of midweek matches next week, starting with their first home contest of the year on Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion against Pepperdine at 7 p.m. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
