UCLA Soccer Players Enjoy U.S. National Team Success

Jan. 20, 2007

U.S. Under-20 National Team
UCLA sophomores Sal Zizzo and Tony Beltran started for the U.S. Under-20 National Team as it tied Guatemala in a World Cup Qualifying game in Panama City on Friday evening. Beltran and the rest of the U.S. defense held Guatemala to zero shots on goal and just four shots total. Zizzo earned his second consecutive start; he also started in the 4-1 U.S. victory over Haiti on Wednesday. Beltran also saw action in the game as a second-half sub.

The U.S., which sits atop Group A with four points, can guarantee a spot in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup with a win or draw against Panama in their third and final match on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. PT. Fans can follow the match live on GolTV and ussoccer.com's MatchTracker.

U.S. National Team
Three former Bruins started for the full U.S. National Team on Saturday afternoon at The Home Depot Center in carson as the U.S. defeated Denmark, 3-1. Matt Reis (1994-97) started in goal and earned his second cap, World Cup vet Jimmy Conrad (1996-97) wore the captain's armband, and Jonathan Bornstein (2004-05) not only earned his first cap but scored the game-winning goal.

With the game tied at one, Bornstein put the U.S. ahead for good in the 57th minute. Justin Mapp set up the goal with a great run and cross into the box. Bornstein took Mapp's cross and one-timed a shot from five yeards out for his first-ever National Team goal, becoming the 40th player in U.S. Soccer history to score in his first game with the national team. Kenny Cooper matched the feat in the 80th minute when his goal provided the final margin.
