LUBBOCK, Texas - UCLA sophomore Pat Valaika has been selected to the updated Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award watch list, as announced Tuesday by the College Baseball Foundation.
Valaika has batted .269 with a team-high 11 doubles, one home run, three triples, 27 RBI and 34 runs in 49 starts at shortstop for the Bruins. Valaika made the cut from the original 50-man watch list to the revised 25-man list.
The native of Valencia, Calif., has compiled a .953 fielding percentage and has posted a .981 fielding percentage in Pac-12 games, committing just two errors in 24 conference contests. An injury sidelined Valaika for UCLA's three-game series at California last weekend, but he has been medically cleared to play this week.
The Pac-12 and Southeastern Conferences lead the nation with five players on the award's revised watch list. The Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented June 30 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions.
Ranked No. 9 by Baseball America, UCLA returns to action at UC Irvine on Tuesday evening. Game time at Anteater Ballpark is 6:30 p.m. The Bruins close the regular season with a three-game series against USC at Jackie Robinson Stadium beginning Friday, May 25.
