UCLA Men's Basketball Picked To Defend Pac-10 Title in 2007-08

Nov. 1, 2007

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA Bruins are picked to finish first in the 2007-08 Pacific-10 Conference Men's basketball race, according to a poll of media members who cover Pac-10 men's basketball. The announcement was made today at the annual men's basketball media day at the Sheraton Gateway hotel.

The poll shows that UCLA, the back-to-back defending Pac-10 Champion, gathered 33 of the 34 first-place votes and is picked the favorite this season with 339 points.

Washington State picked up the remaining first-place vote and is tabbed for second place with 273 points. It's the highest placing for the Cougars since the media poll started in 1992-93 (their previous best was fourth in 1995-96).

Oregon, the defending Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament Champion, is slotted for third place with 240 points, followed closely by Arizona with 238 points in fourth.

Stanford was picked to finish fifth with 205 points, followed by USC in sixth with 184 points. California (140 points), Washington (132 points), Arizona State (81 points) and Oregon State (38 points) round out the preseason poll.

"We are excited about this year," UCLA head coach Ben Howland said. "The biggest thing that I have no control over is our health. We've had a number of different nagging injuries through the preseason. We are very excited about our core group returning from two Final Fours and adding the best high school player in the nation."
