LOS ANGELES - In a top 10 battle at the Marks Tennis Stadium on Wednesday, the seventh-ranked USC men's tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over No. 6 UCLA in a non-conference match. With the win, USC moves to 10-2 overall, while the Bruins fall to 9-3.
UCLA was swept in doubles for just the second time this season, as USC notched wins at all three courts to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
USC didn't waste any time in singles, moving out to a 2-0 lead following a straight-set win by Emilio Gomez at court No. 5. UCLA's lone win early came at court No. 2, where Amit Inbar upset 19th-ranked Daniel Nguyen, 6-4, 6-4.
However, before UCLA could gain any momentum, another straight-set USC win at court No. 3 made the score to 3-1 and brought the Trojans withing a point of clinching the match. Top-ranked Steve Johnson got that clinching win, as he downed 43rd-ranked Daniel Kosakowski, 6-2, 6-2 at court No. 1.
In addition to Inbar, the only other Bruin player to win a singles match was Holden Seguso, who downed JT Sundling, 6-3, 6-2 at court No. 6.
UCLA will be competing at the 122nd Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla, Calif. this weekend. For more information about that event, click HERE.
