The fifth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team hosts a two-match, non-conference series this week against No. 15 Ball State, Mar. 14 and 16 in Pauley Pavilion. Both matches are slated to start at 7 p.m.
Darren Preston will call the action for both matches on www.uclabruins.com.
Ball State (10-7) enters the week in the middle of a five-match road trip that started with victories at Quincy (3-2) and Carthage (3-1) before a loss on Mar. 9 at Ohio State (1-3).
This week, BSU boasts at least one nationally ranked player in each of the major offensive categories. Senior outside hitter Nick Meyer ranks 13th in kills per game (4.46) and 11th in points per game (5.25). In addition, junior middle blocker Matt McCarthy ranks ninth in hitting percentage (.482) and teammate Ryan Clarke ranks in a tie for 12th in blocking (1.26).
The Bruins lead the series with Ball State 17-1 and have won three straight since suffering their only blemish to the Cardinals in 1995, a year the Bruins were 31-1 overall.
Last week, UCLA played one of its best matches in sweeping Loyola Chicago on Mar. 7. Seniors Steve Klosterman and Paul George combined for 28 kills, and sophomore Jamie Diefenbach added 10 kills and a career-high of three aces.
Two nights later, the Bruins could not sustain the magic. They committed 24 service errors -- including 12 in Game 3 -- and lost 3-0 on the road to No. 2 UC Irvine. Klosterman led all players with 21 kills and 24 points.
"We didn't get (Irvine) into the passing trouble that the previous opponents have that have beaten them," coach Al Scates said. "We weren't able to execute our serving game."
For the Ball State series, both matches will be High School/Club Volleyball Nights. Please call 310-206-3444 for more information of to register a team.
