No. 3 UCLA Defeats No. 9 San Diego State, 9-3

LOS ANGELES - The Bruin seniors shined on "Senior Day" but junior KK Clark led UCLA with a hat trick as No. 3 UCLA defeated No. 9 San Diego State, 9-3, in a MPSF game at Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday. The Bruins (22-5, 4-3 MPSF) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and cruised to victory.

Senior Grace Reynolds got UCLA off to a 2-0 lead with goals at 6:57 and 5:52 of the opening period. Junior Sarah Orozco ended the scoring in the first with a goal at the 3:09 mark to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead at the end of the opening stanza.

Senior Priscilla Orozco opened the scoring in the second quarter (6:19) to put UCLA up 4-0. Clark scored back-to-back goals (4:56, 2:11) to extend the lead to 6-0. Then sophomore Brooke Martin scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 18 seconds left to give the Bruins a 7-0 lead at halftime.

UCLA's defense was stellar in the first half, denying the Aztecs on all eight power play opportunities. The Bruins scored on just one of their three 6-on-5 opportunities.

San Diego State (19-12, 1-6 MPSF) scored first in the third period when junior Meaghan Poland fired a one-timer past senior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement at the 4:16 mark. Clark then completed her hat trick with a score with 1:20 left to end the scoring at 8-1 after three periods.

SDSU opened the scoring in the fourth quarter when senior Sarah Brady fired a shot near the left post with 4:16 remaining. Then Bruin senior Kelsey McGinley scored her sixth goal of the season with 2:18 to go to give UCLA a 9-2 advantage. The Aztecs scored the final goal of the game with nine seconds left on a power play goal by junior Leanne Ford. It was the Aztecs' first power play goal in 11 6-on-5 opportunities.

Dement finished the game with 12 saves in the cage for UCLA. SDSU goalkeeper Kelly Campoli picked up nine saves.

UCLA will return to action in San Jose, Calif., when the Bruins begin their title defense of the MPSF Tournament on April 29.
