Women's Track & Field Has Strong Showing at Northridge

Northridge Invitational Results Get Acrobat Reader

The women's track and field team had a strong showing on Saturday at the Northridge Invitational despite inclement weather as Bruin athletes won three events during the meet. Nijah Nelms, Katherine Salcido and Katja Goldring led the way as all were event winners.

Nelms won the 100m with a time of 12.37, Goldring won the 3000m with a lifetime-best run of 9:47.60 and Salcido won the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.07.

Alexis Walker, who is primarily a high jumper, took a stab at the 400m hurdles and finished second overall with a solid first time of 62.50. Emily Gordon, a transfer from UCSB placed fifth (66.10), while heptathlete Tatum Souza was sixth (66.44).

In the sprint events, Breyonna Hunter was the top finisher in both the 200m (25.70) and 400m (56.75) as she placed second in both events. She was the top collegiate finisher in the 200m. Also in the 200m and 400m, Chelsey Washington placed sixth in the 200m (27.57) and fifth in the 400m (59.96).

The distance squad was out in full force as the Bruin women had five athletes in the top 10 in the 1500m and eight in the 3000m. Toberty led the way in the 1500m with a second-place finish and season-best run of 4:32.99. Kelsey Smith was third (4:34.83), Drew Drysdale was seventh (4:40.37), Tamara Purpura was ninth (4:45.11) and Elle Sanders placed 10th (4:46.08). Smith placed third in the 3000m (9:53.74), Melissa Skiba was fifth (10:05.88), Rachel Butler placed sixth (lifetime-best, 10:13.14), Caitlin Schmitt was seventh (10:15.78, lifetime-best), Meghan Marvin was eighth (10:17.17), Ava Kent finished ninth (10:23.40) and Taryn Pastoor placed 10th (10:36.84, lifetime-best) to round out Bruins finishing in the top 10.

The women's team will head to USC for the Trojan Invitational next weekend (Mar. 23-24) as they continue the outdoor season.
