Three UCLA Student-Athletes Honored On Academic All-District Team

May 21, 2009

Three UCLA student-athletes were selected to the CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII At-Large teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Men's tennis player Michael Look earned first-team honors, while gymnast Ariana Berlin and golfer Tiffany Joh received second-team acclaim. Look is now eligible for the national Academic All-America ballot.

Look, a senior from Redcliffe, Australia, was recently named the 2009 UCLA Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for owning the highest grade point average amongst his peers (3.91). A two-time First-Team All-Pac-10 Academic selection, Look enjoyed a fine 2009 season, achieving a career-high national singles ranking of No. 74. He was also ranked No. 52 nationally in doubles with partner Nick Meister. Look recently helped the Bruins advance to the semifinals at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships in College Station, Texas. A singles quarterfinalist at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., Look finished his senior season with a 19-9 overall mark in singles, and a 15-10 record in doubles play.

Berlin, a senior from San Diego, CA, was the 2009 Pac-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year for gymnastics, posting a 3.56 cumulative GPA in World Arts & Culture. She had a standout senior year, placing fourth in the all-around and fifth on uneven bars and earning All-America honors for the first time in her career. She closed out her stellar Bruin career having hit 96% of her routines without a fall, and she never missed a competition, competing in 57 consecutive meets. This is Berlin's first-ever Academic All-District honor.

Joh, who is also a senior from San Diego, CA, carries a 3.45 cumulative GPA in Communication Studies and is a two-time selection to the Pac-10 All-Academic team. A three-time collegiate All-American, she won her second U.S. Amateur Publinks title last June after playing on the victorious U.S. Curtis Cup Team. In September, she represented the United States on the World Amateur Team. Last May, she tied for first individually at the NCAA Championship before falling in a playoff. In 2006, she was voted the Pac-10 Newcomer of the year. Two years ago she won the Pac-10 individual title, and in 2008 she was voted the Pac-10 Player of the Year. The Joh has earned 10 nominations to the UCLA Director's Honor Roll.
