WICHITA, Kan. - UCLA junior catcher Tyler Heineman has been named to the official watch list for the 2012 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com, as announced Friday by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
The Johnny Bench Award honors the nation's premier collegiate catcher at the conclusion of each season. This year's award will be presented in Wichita, Kan., on June 28.
Heineman, who hails from Pacific Palisades, Calif., leads UCLA with a .412 batting average through the team's first 29 games. He leads all Pac-12 Conference players with a .516 batting average and ranks second in batting average entering this weekend's games.
The watch list for this season's Johnny Bench Award currently features 51 catchers from Division I universities.
Heineman has hit safely in 27 of UCLA's 29 games and enters this weekend's series at No. 4 Arizona carrying an 11-game hitting streak. He opened the season hitting safely in each of UCLA's first 11 ballgames.
UCLA opens a three-game Pac-12 series at No. 4 Arizona on Friday evening. Game time at Hi Corbett Field is 6 p.m. The Bruins and Wildcats continue their series Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.
