UCLA senior Kevin Chappell is one of 20 Division I college golfers on the 2008 Jack Nicklaus Award Watch List, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced this week. The award is presented to the Player of the Year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III as well as the NAIA.
Chappell, 22, is ranked fourth nationally among collegiate players this week. He won the PING/Arizona Intercollegiate in January, recording a score of 198 (-15) to break a 23-year old school record and he has not lost in five match play competitions this season. He also has won Pac-10 Player of the Month honors twice (November and January). In addition, he leads the team with a 71.3 scoring average and has played his 20 rounds this year in 10-under par.
A two-time All-American and three-time All-Pac-10 selection, Chappell has won four times in his collegiate career, including the 2006 NCAA East Regional.
The Nicklaus Award winners will be named immediately following the final round of each respective national championship tournament. All four Nicklaus Award honorees will be invited to Muirfield Village for the final round of the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, OH. Additionally, a 20-player All-Nicklaus Team will be announced on June 10.
