UCLA Takes First Round Lead at Regional Challenge

Top-ranked UCLA built an eight-stroke lead after the opening round of the 17th annual Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club Monday.

The Bruins posted an even par round of 284 in cold, damp conditions and led runner-up Duke (292, +8) by eight strokes. Denver was third at 295 (+11), followed by Florida State and host Ohio State at 296 (+12).

UCLA's low score honors for the day went to junior Lee Lopez who fired a one-under par round of 70 and was tied for third place. Lopez had four birdies and three bogeys on her card and was three strokes behind first-round leader Rachel Walton (67, -4) of Denver. Junior Tiffany Lua and sophomore Ani Gulugian were tied for seventh place at even par 71. Lua had two birdies and three bogeys on her card, and Gulugian recorded two birdies on the last three holes to finish her round. Tied for 11th at 72 (+1) was freshman Erynne Lee, who recorded 11 consecutive pars after a pair of birdies on her sixth and seventh holes. Finally, senior Brianna Do carded at 76 (+5) and was tied for 35th.

Freshman Kyle Roig, playing as an individual, was tied for 18th after posting a two-over par round of 73.
