Second-Ranked Bruins Set Consecutive Shutout Record

Sept. 21, 2008

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA women's soccer team broke the school record for consecutive shutouts on Sunday, posting its seventh in a row en route to a 3-0 victory over New Mexico at the UCLA Women's Cup. The Bruins have surrendered just one goal this season, holding their opponents scoreless for the last 688 minutes.

UCLA (7-0-1) had a number of excellent scoring chances in the first half, taking 10 shots with seven of those coming on goal. The Bruins eventually put one in at the 8:05 mark, as forward Kara Lang registered her second goal of the season. The play began when defender Lauren Wilmoth hit a ball up to Lauren Cheney, who was in the box with her back to the goal. Cheney tapped the ball back to the top of the box to a waiting Lang, who then curled in a shot to the top left corner.

Sophomore Liz Zadro would score UCLA's second goal of the half on a brilliant strike at the 39:34 mark. Senior Christina DiMartino got free on the left side of the field, sending a ball into the box to Zadro, who was making a run while being tightly marked by a New Mexico defender. Zadro elected to one-time the ball, sending it in to the top of the net for her second goal of the year.

Sophomore Kylie Wright nearly gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead heading into halftime (42nd minute), however her shot from about 25 yards out that hit the crossbar before rolling out of harm's way.

UCLA wouldn't have to wait long for that third goal, however, as just five minutes into the second half, Kristina Larsen connected with senior McCall Zerboni to give the Bruins a 3-0 advantage. Zerboni sent a ball across the top of the box, finding a running Larsen, who sent it in from about 18 yards out. It marked Larsen's third goal of the season.

UCLA hits the road next week, traveling to Santa Clara on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. That match can be seen live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
