Cyndi Gallagher and the UCLA swimming and diving team has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent, joining an already outstanding 2008-2009 signing class. Signing with the Bruins are Quah Ting Wen (Singapore), Rachel Godfred (Mercer Island, WA), Scarlet Cann (Tacoma, WA) and Kelsey Hall (Santee, CA).
Quah Ting Wen was a 2008 Olympian for Singapore in the 100m free and the 400 individual medley events. Ting follows in the footsteps of Olympic teammate and UCLA standout, Nicolette Teo, a three-time Olympian for Singapore.
Ting Wen will have an immediate impact on the Bruins in the sprint freestyle events and Coach Gallagher says that "her strength lies in focus, her versatility and her untapped potential". Singapore's rising star swims for Swim Fast Singapore under coach David Lim.
Rachel Godfred comes to UCLA via Mercer Island, WA and King Aquatics under Coach John Walker. Godfred is the Washington State Champion in the 500 freestyle, and also broke Coach Gallagher's high school record in the event as well.
"Rachel has established herself as an up-and-coming IM and fly specialist and she will add depth in a number of events for the Bruins," added Gallagher.
Scarlet Cann joins the Bruin squad from Tacoma, WA and swims with King Aquatics under Sean Hutchinson. Cann is a King Aquatics teammate of fellow incoming freshmen, Lindsay Marchand and Rachel Godfred.
"Her passion is in racing and she will immediately help the Bruins in the relays and be a strong contender in the 100 and 200 freestyle as well," noted Gallagher
Kelsey Hall is from Santee, CA and swims at North Coast Aquatics for Jeff Pease. Hall is a middle and distance freestyle specialist.
"Kelsey has an incredible work ethic and will add depth to an already strong distance group," said Gallagher.
Kelsey is also a top student and has been admitted into the UCLA Honors program.
The UCLA swimming and diving team also signed Karina Silva, a diver from Miami, FL earlier this month. These five standout student-athletes join eight signees from the November signing period, giving UCLA a strong and talented group of 13 incoming athletes in the fall. Signing in November were Emily Andelson (Indian Wells, CA/Piranha Swim Club), Margaret Boyd, Stephanie Christofferson (Greenbrae, CA/North Bay Aquatics), Laurence Delisle (San Jose, CA/De Anza Cupertino Aquatics), Lindsey Marchand (Gig Harbor, WA/King Aquatics), Andrea Reigel (Laguna Beach, CA/Nellie Gators), Karoline Sanderud (Norway) and Michelle (Maggy) Vale (Colleyville, TX/GC Divers).
