PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team dropped a 13-12 decision to No. 4 Hawai'Ii on Saturday evening at the Stanford Invitational. The loss snapped the Bruins' program-record 46-game win streak, as UCLA absorbed its first defeat since April 14, 2007.
Senior Kelly Mason led Hawai'i (5-1) with six goals. The Rainbow Wahine also received three goals from junior Dagmar Genee and one pair of goals from sophomore Saara Majuri.
UCLA led the contest at the end of each of the first three quarters. The Bruins outscored the Rainbow Wahine by a 4-3 margin in the first quarter and maintained a 9-5 lead at halftime.
Hawai'i closed the gap to 10-8 in the third quarter, outscoring the Bruins by a 3-1 margin. The Rainbow Wahine outlasted UCLA in the final period, assuming a one-goal lead by outscoring UCLA, 5-2.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen made five saves for the Bruins. Hawai'i goalkeeper Serena Bredin made four stops in the cage.
UCLA's last loss came against Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The Bruins dropped a 7-6 decision on April 14, 2007. The Bruins' 46-game inter-season win streak comes after UCLA won 40 consecutive games from May 2004 through February 2006. Hawai'i captured its first-ever victory against the Bruins in 32 contests.
UCLA resumes play at the Stanford Invitational against the U.S. National Team on Sunday, Feb. 8. Game time is 9:10 a.m. The exhibition match will not count in UCLA's regular season record.
