UCLA swept the first ever Pac-12 Gymnastics weekly awards, with sophomore Samantha Peszek and senior Tauny Frattone being awarded the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-12 Special Performance of the Week honors, respectively, for the week of Jan. 2-8.
Peszek, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., led the No. 1 Bruins past No. 5 Utah on Jan. 8 in a meet that went down to the wire. UCLA earned the nail-biting win, 196.075-196.025, in its Conference opener in front of a sellout crowd. UCLA jumped out to a fast start on the vault behind career-highs from Peszek (9.925) and Frattone (9.95). On the uneven bars, Peszek's 9.825 helped keep UCLA's lead to over a point. A shaky beam rotation by UCLA cut the lead considerably, but it was Peszek's 9.825 that helped keep UCLA ahead going into the last rotation, and her 9.875 on floor helped secure the victory.
Tying her career best of 9.95 on the vault, Frattone's performance in the opening rotation provided the Bruins with a strong start and the highest event score in the nation on any event during opening week. A native of Lake Forest, Calif., Frattone also performed well on the floor, earning a 9.875 to finish in a tie for second place.
The Special Performance of the Week nod is Frattone's third of her career; she won the award twice in 2011. This is Peszek's first Gymnast of the Week award. She had previously earned Special Performance of the Week honors last season.
UCLA will next travel to California on Jan. 15 at 2pm.
