MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The No. 18 UCLA women's rowing team lost in two of three varsity races to No. 4 USC on Saturday morning at the UCLA boathouse in the annual showdown between the crosstown rivals.
UCLA won the varsity four race but dropped the varsity eight and second varsity eight races. The Bruins' varsity eight posted a time of 6:37.00 while the Trojans posted a time of 6:22.30.
The second varsity eight finished in 6:38.90, trailing USC's time of 6:33.30.
The Bruins' varsity four overcame a late deficit to the Trojans and finished in 7:16.50. The Trojans crossed the finish line in 7:19.00, 3.5 seconds behind UCLA.
The two schools raced a novice eight and a second varisty four race as well. The Bruins' novice eight crew prevailed over the USC crew by posting a time of 6:55.90, while USC finished the race in 7:07.00. In the final race of the day, UCLA's second varsity four and novice four faced off against USC's second varsity four. The Trojans won the race with a time of 7:48.50 while UCLA's second varsity four came in at 7:56.70. The Bruins' novice four finished with a time of 8:17.00.
This was also the final home event for seven seniors on UCLA's crew. After the dual meet, the Bruins honored seniors Katherine Hruska, Anoush Khojikian, Alaizah Koorji, Rachel LaBella, Caroline Curson, Christa Czer and Chelsea Wolfe.
UCLA's rowing team returns to action in the Pacific Coast and Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14, respectively, in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
