EUGENE, Ore. - The UCLA baseball team was edged by Oregon, 3-2, in its series-opening game Friday afternoon at PK Park. Right-hander Gerrit Cole (4-4) absorbed the loss, despite limiting Oregon to three runs (one earned) and six hits in eight innings as he hurled his first collegiate complete game.

Oregon right-hander Erik Stavert (5-3) recorded the victory, surrendering one run and six hits in eight innings while logging eight strikeouts and two walks against UCLA (20-22, 11-8 Pac-10).

Trailing 3-1 with two outs in the ninth, shortstop Niko Gallego and pinch-hitter Marc Navarro both reached base on back-to-back full-count walks. A single to left by second baseman Eddie Murray scored Gallego, reducing UCLA's deficit to 3-2. After right fielder Justin Uribe was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Oregon right-hander Drew Gagnier struck out UCLA center fielder Blair Dunlap to end the game and collect his team-leading seventh save.

Bruin designated hitter Casey Haerther notched UCLA's only multiple-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with one double. Gallego was 1-for-3 with one RBI, and Murray went 1-for-4 with UCLA's other RBI.

Oregon (14-29, 4-12 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. After leading off the frame with a double to right field, left fielder Curtis Raulinaitis advanced to third base on a deep fly out to left field. A ground ball hit by designated hitter Paul Eshelman to second baseman Eddie Murray was mishandled, and Raulinitis scored from third base.

The Ducks added their second run in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on the corners and one out, UCLA caught first base runner KC Serna in a pickle between first and second base. After three back-and-forth throws, Murray's throw to Cole got away, allowing center fielder Caleb Tommasini to score from third.

UCLA reduced the Ducks' lead to 2-1 in the top of the seventh. Cohen lined a one-out double inside the left-field line and advanced to third base on a groundout by third baseman Tyler Rahmatulla. A two-out double to left by Gallego plated Cohen from third.

Oregon scored its third run in the bottom of the eighth. Tommasini led off the frame getting hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error to first base by Cole. A sacrifice pop fly by shortstop KC Serna scored Tommasini from third base.

UCLA faces Oregon in the second contest of a three-game series Saturday at 11 a.m. Live video of Saturday's game will be available online at Oregon's athletic website (goducks.com, video subscription fee required).
