STANFORD, Calif. - The UCLA baseball team lost its series opener at Stanford, 4-3, in 10 innings on Thursday evening at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Stanford overcame a 3-0 deficit in the seventh inning before adding the winning run with one out in the 10th inning.

The Cardinal (12-12, 6-4 Pac-10) earned the victory in the 10th after leading off the frame by drawing a walk and hit batter. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Catcher Zach Jones bounced a hard grounder to third baseman Casey Haerther, who cleanly fielded the ball with a dive to his left before sailing a throw from his knees over catcher Gino Aielli, allowing left fielder Toby Gerhart to score the winning run.

Cardinal right-hander Drew Storen (3-0) earned the victory, tossing 1.2 hitless innings in relief while recording four strikeouts. UCLA left-hander Gavin Brooks (0-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering one run and one hit in 2.2 innings of relief. Brooks registered two strikeouts and walked four batters.

Right-hander Gerrit Cole did not earn a decision for the Bruins (12-18, 5-5 Pac-10), notching seven strikeouts without issuing a walk in 6.1 innings. Cole surrendered three runs and seven hits in his eighth start of the season. Stanford right-hander Jeffrey Inman limited UCLA to three runs (two earned) and six hits in six innings, recording seven strikeouts and two walks.

UCLA was led at the plate by Haerther, who went 2-for-5 with one home run. Shortstop Niko Gallego went 2-for-4, and designated hitter Alex Weber-Shapiro went 1-for-3 with one double. Stanford right fielder Kellen Kiilsgaard went 2-for-4 with one run, and five other hitters for the Cardinal each registered one hit.

The Bruins took the game's first lead, scoring one run on an RBI-groundout by catcher Steve Rodriguez in the top of the second inning to assume a 1-0 lead. Haerther's two-run home run to right field with two outs in the top of the third handed UCLA a 3-0 cushion.

Stanford tied the contest, 3-3, with a three-run seventh inning. With runners at first and third, Cole balked on a pickoff move, allowing Kiilsgaard to score from third. After moving to third base on a groundout, pinch-hitter Jonathan Kaskow scored on a double to center by first baseman Brent Milleville. A single up the middle by third baseman Adam Gaylord plated Milleville.

UCLA continues its three-game series at Stanford on Friday. Game time at Sunken Diamond is 5:30 p.m. A live audio broadcast will be available online at uclabruins.com.

Game Notes: UCLA suffered its ninth one-run loss of the season and dropped to 0-3 in extra-inning ballgames...Gerrit Cole finished with seven strikeouts on the mound, pushing his team-leading total to 58...Casey Haerther registered his team-leading 14th multiple-hit game of the season and his sixth multiple-RBI performance in 2009.
