Women's Basketball Signs Three Standouts
By: UCLA Athletics

Nov. 10, 2011

UCLA head women's basketball coach Cori Close announced today the signing of three highly-rated high school standouts - Nirra Fields (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS), Lauren Holiday (Chatsworth, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Kari Korver (Paramount, Calif./Valley Christian HS) - to national letters of intent. The three newcomers will enter UCLA in the fall of 2012 as freshmen and will become members of the 2012-2013 Bruin women's basketball team.

The trio joins Alyssia Brewer (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS/Tennessee), who began taking classes at UCLA during the Fall quarter, will redshirt during the 2011-12 season and play her senior year with UCLA in '12-'13. Brewer averaged 10.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore (2009-10), was the MVP of the 2010 SEC Tournament and was the conference's Sixth Woman of the Year. Brewer Release

"These young ladies are not only outstanding basketball players, but exceptional young people," said coach Close. "We look forward to them joining the Bruin family and contributing to the success of our program."

Nirra Fields

Fields, a 5-9 guard, averaged 26.5 points per game at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. last season. She transferred to Mater Dei High School over the summer after Los Angeles Lakers' head coach Mike Brown and his wife Carolyn became her legal guardians. Fields is originally from Canada and has played internationally for her country. In the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championships, she averaged 15.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. In the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championships, she scored 17 points in a game versus the United States. She is ranked as the No. 11 prospect in the 2012 class by ESPN HoopGurlz and the No. 3 guard.

"Nirra is an explosive scorer with an exceptional work ethic, and is a fearless competitor," Close said. "I had the opportunity to watch her this summer in the U19 World Championships and see her go head-to-head with the best in the world and be the leading scorer when Canada beat the U.S. She will be a very exciting player to watch in Bruin blue and gold, and will be a major leader in our championship quest."

Lauren Holiday

Holiday, a 5-8 guard, averaged 23.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 4.6 steals a game last season for Campbell Hall High School. She is known as a tough defensive player and comes from an outstanding basketball pedigree, as she is the sister of former Bruin and current Philadelphia 76er Jrue Holiday. Her brother, Justin, recently graduated from the University of Washington, where he was a member of the basketball team, and is now playing professionally overseas. She is ranked as the No. 65 prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz and No. 26 among guards.

"Lauren is one of the best defenders I have ever seen," Close said. "She is relentlessly competitive, but a selfless teammate at the same time. I also love her ability to create for others. She impacts every play."

Kari Korver

Korver, a 5-9 guard, was ranked the No. 98 player in the nation and the No. 37 guard by ESPN HoopGurlz. She averaged 25.3 points, 3.7 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game last season at Valley Christian High School. She scored at least 30 points in seven games, with a high of 39 points against Maranatha High. Korver totaled 37 points against Eastside High, including 11 three-pointers. She converted at least five three-point shots in 13 games last season. Korver, like Holiday, comes from a basketball pedigree. Her cousin is Kyle Korver, an eight-year pro in the NBA and member of the Chicago Bulls.

"Kari is in my opinion the best long-range shooter in the 2012 class," Close said. "Her range and quick release put her in a class by herself. But her basketball I.Q., nose for rebounding, and strong character make her a difference maker."
