IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team received a pair of goals from eight players to defeat No. 13 Long Beach State, 18-2, in first-round action at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Seniors Anne Belden, Tanya Gandy and Katie Rulon, sophomores Megan Burmeister and Kelsey McGinley and freshmen Nicole Barker, Randi Bresee and KK Clark each netted one pair of goals. The Bruins also received one goal each from sophomore Noel Umphrey and freshman Hannah Sebenaler.
UCLA scored the game's first four goals, as Gandy opened the scoring with a goal at the 5:44 mark in the first quarter. Belden converted on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 4:45 remaining and Clark added the Bruins' third goal with 3:50 left in the opening quarter. Rulon's goal on a 6-on-5 handed UCLA an early 4-0, first-quarter lead.
Long Beach State got on the board with one goal at the 1:39 mark by Krizia Cerda in the first quarter before Burmeister answered with her first of two goals with 40 seconds left in the frame.
UCLA used a 6-0 scoring run through the second quarter to secure the UC Irvine Invitational victory.
The Bruins outscored the 49ers, 3-1, in the third quarter and by a 4-0 margin in the final period.
Freshman Caitlin Dement earned her first collegiate start, totaling a career-high 13 saves in four quarters.
Long Beach State's Kristen Stagier logged three saves in the first half, and Lauren Randazzo totaled four stops in the second half.
