WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior Markel Walker has been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday. Walker recorded the first UCLA triple-double in eight years and helped the Bruins to a pair of victories over Washington and Washington State last weekend.
Walker averaged 15.0 points, 14.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game over the two contests, playing 81 combined minutes.
On Saturday, Walker had 14 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists to post the first Bruin triple-double since Feb. 19, 2004 when Noelle Quinn had 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. It was just the fifth triple-double in school history. Walker had 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half, but just two assists. The junior facilitated the offense more in the second half and had eight assists to go with four points and seven rebounds. Already with double figures in points and rebounds, Walker notched her 10th assist with 38 seconds remaining in the game.
Walker had a double-double in Thursday's overtime win over Washington and was three assists shy of a triple-double, posting 16 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists, while playing 44 of a possible 45 minutes. She had seven points, six rebounds and four assists in the first half and eight points and seven boards in the second half.
Walker is third on the team with 13.0 ppg and leads the squad with 10.9 rpg, which would rank second among Pac-12 players. However, she is not qualified for conference stats because she hasn't played in 75 percent of the Bruins' contests (Walker will reach that mark after the March 1 Washington State game if she plays in every game between now and then).
This is Walker's first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 44th all-time selection for UCLA.
The Bruins open up a three-game road trip next weekend in the Bay Area. UCLA will take on California on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. and Stanford on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 12 p.m. Free audio will be available at UCLABruins.com. In addition, Sunday's UCLA-Stanford contest will be shown live on Fox Sports Net.
