Ojai, Calif. - Bruin senior Riza Zalameda advanced to the semifinals in singles at the Pac-10 Championships on Friday, defeating USC's Gabriela Niculescu 7-5, 6-4 at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
Zalameda, seeded fourth, was on a collision course with top-seeded Hilary Barte of Stanford, however Barte had to retire in the first set of her match against Cal's Claire Ilcinkas. Zalameda will now meet Ilcinkas for a spot in the finals on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
In main draw doubles action, top-seeded Tracy Lin and Zalameda were upset in the first round, falling to ASU's Micaela Hein/Kelcy McKenna, 8-5. Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore also fell in the first round Friday, dropping an 8-5 decision of their own to Washington's Kelsey Anonsen/Venise Chan.
In the Invitational singles draw, fourth-seeded Alex McGoodwin earned a spot in the semifinals by upsetting top-seeded Jennifer Yen of Stanford, 6-1, 6-1. She will meet third-seeded Hein of ASU on Saturday.
McGoodwin and partner Andrea Remynse are still alive in the Invitational doubles draw, as they beat Oregon's Tina Snodgrass/Mimi Songsermsawas, 8-0 in the first round. They went on to beat Stanford's Lejla Hodzic/Yen 8-6. UCLA's Becky Duesler and Sarah Yang were beaten in the first round by Cal's Rachael Dillon/Daron Moore, 8-3.
