PULLMAN, Wash. - The UCLA baseball team fell to Washington State, 5-1, in the series opener Friday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. Senior right-hander Tyson Brummett (9-5) pitched his seventh complete game of the season, allowing five runs and nine hits in 8.0 innings.

Brummett became just the eighth pitcher in school history to have thrown seven or more complete games and currently ranks second on the single-season complete games list (tied with six others). The right-hander from Salem, Utah, struck out six and walked two.

Right fielder Gabe Cohen led UCLA (28-23, 12-7 Pac-10) at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Washington State right-hander Wayne Daman Jr. (5-4) allowed just one run and six hits en route to tossing his first complete game of the season. Daman Jr. struck out two hitters and issued just one walk. Third baseman Paul Gran hit 2-for-4 with two runs, and left fielder Simi Reynolds tallied two RBI for the host Cougars (26-23, 9-13 Pac-10).

UCLA scored its run in the top of the first. With two outs and runners and first and second, Cohen lined a base hit up the middle to score shortstop Brandon Crawford.

The Cougars answered with three runs and five hits in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Scott Sutmeier drove home designated hitter Travis Coulter with a single through the right side. With runners aboard second and third, Reynolds registered a two-RBI double down the right-field line.

Washington State added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Gran led off the inning with a double to left and scored on the next at-bat when right fielder Jared Prince delivered a double to right-center field. Prince scored on a sacrifice fly to center by second baseman Jeff Miller.

UCLA and Washington State continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m. Left-hander Tim Murphy will take the hill for the Bruins, and Washington State will counter with right-hander Nick Ison.

Game Notes: Brummett's total of seven complete games this season ranks second in school history; six other Bruins have thrown seven complete games in a single season; former major leaguer Tim Leary tossed 10 complete games in 1979...Brandon Crawford's 10-game hit streak ended; Crawford has collected two 10-game hit streaks this season...Eddie Murray made his first career start as the designated hitter...Brummett retired the final eight batters he faced, striking out three of those hitters looking.
