No. 3 UCLA Men's Water Polo Opens Season With 22-2 Victory

LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 22-2, in its season-opening match on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Center in the first game of the day-long UCLA Invitational.

UCLA (1-0) received a game-high four goals from senior Brett Hays, sophomore Lucas Reynolds and freshman David Culpan. Sophomore Paul Pickell and freshman Alex Johnson each netted three goals.

CMS (0-1) scored the game's first goal, as John Holland found the back of the cage with 6:47 remaining in the opening period. UCLA outscored the visitors by a 7-0 margin in the remainder of the first quarter. Pickell tied the match, 1-1, with an extra-man goal at 6:22 before Cullen Hennessy gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead with a goal at 5:27.

UCLA outscored CMS, 6-1, in the second quarter to push its cushion to 13-2 by halftime. Culpan and Pickell each netted two goals for the Bruins in the second period.

The Bruins held CMS scoreless in the second half, recording four goals in the third quarter and five in the final frame.

Four goalkeepers each played one quarter for UCLA. Sophomore Matt Rapacz allowed one goal in the first quarter, and freshman Stephen White allowed one in the second frame. Senior Andrew Mesesan made one penalty stop in the third quarter, and sophomore James Hartshorne tallied two stops in the final period.

UCLA is slated to play two scrimmage contests later in the day at Spieker Aquatics Center (Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara) before taking on La Verne at 6 p.m. in the evening in its second regular-season match.
