The top-ranked Bruins improved to 6-0 after defeating fourth-ranked Cal 12-8 on Friday, and Pacific 30-5 on Saturday to open MPSF play. The Bruins have now outscored their opponents 85-32.

UCLA used a 3-0 run in the second period to defeat Cal at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley on Friday night. The Bears jumped out to the early lead with a goal from Elsie Windes with 6:14 to go in the first period. Then Kelly Rulon and Courtney Mathewson scored one minute apart to put the Bruins back ahead 2-1. UCLA lead 4-3 going into the second period.

UCLA took control of the game with goals by Kelly Rulon, Gabrielle Domanic, and Tanya Gandy in the second period. The defense held the Bears scoreless for the quarter, allowing the team to take a commanding 7-3 lead into halftime.

The Bruins traded goals with the Bears for last two periods to solidify the win. Mathewson, Gandy, and Kelly Rulon all had two goals a piece, and Emily Feher notched four saves in the victory. Cal's record dropped to 3-4 with the loss.

On Saturday, the Bruins traveled to Stockton, California to take on the Pacific Tigers. The Bruins burst out of the gates, scoring the first eight goals of the match. UCLA lead 10-2 after the first period of play and 17-4 by halftime. The game ended with 11 straight UCLA goals, making the final score 30-5.

The 30 goals is a new school record for UCLA. The 25-goal margin of defeat is also a new school record. The previous record of goals scored was 22, set last year against Cal State Bakersfield and Occidental College.

Freshman Melissa Mordell scored five goals to tie the school record for goals in a game. The record is shared by current teammate Kelly Rulon. UCLA outshot the Tigers 42-17. Pacific's record dropped to 0-4 overall.

The Bruins first home game is next Thursday, February 22, against Hawai'i.
